It Takes Two To Talk: A Practical Guide For Parents of Children With Language Delays.
Author: Jan Pepper and Elaine Weitzman
Check it out on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Takes-Two-Talk-Practical-Children/dp/0921145195
Brief description - This book is aimed at parents and gives you loads of understanding of how to increase communication opportunities with your child. It also gives lots of practical steps, ideas and activities for developing communication. I like this book because it doesn't make you feel like your child is a failure because his speech is delayed, but rather focuses on helping you understand where your child is at, and what are the next steps he needs to learn. Easy to read and gets you motivated to create communication moments with your child, regardless of her stage of development.
When Slow Is Fast Enough: Educating the Delayed Preschool Child
Author: Joan F Goodman
Check it out on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/When-Slow-Fast-Enough-Educating/sim/0898627931/2
Brief description - This book is about an educational psychologist who explores the learning environments for children with development delay and learning difficulties. She questions whether the process of trying to accelerate development so that a child can be mainstreamed, may not produce the very behaviours that we seek to prevent, e.g. passivity. Her writings helped to shape my thoughts about the goals of education and what I want in a school setting for my child. It was written in 1992 but I think it is still relevant. The only thing is she uses the term "mental retardation" alot as it was the acceptable phrase at that time, I had to take a deep breath and see past that. She really wants to see kids with developmental delay to reach their full potential and I appreciated that perspective.
